anela I can't stop the Young Ones references from popping into my head! "Neil! Are these lentils South African?!? You bastard, you complete and utter bastard!" 😂😂😂 (I'm sorry, guys. This is like my compulsion to say "Anybody want a peanut?" after someone says "I mean it", in reference to Andre the Giant in The Princess Bride.) #AquaMercuryFTW

Ava I have noticed that too. Apparently those who don't eat meat much have a bad time getting rid of colds and always have the sniffles. I can vouch for that as I am one of those people but I can't bring myself to eat red meat. I mean, I have other reasons for my nasal problems but I have always wondered...if I liked meat more maybe it would help but yknow. I had a friend a while back who was a hardcore vegan and would remind everyone at every chance they got. They were also appeared very unhealthy, from breathing problems, to weight, to depression. I don't know how closely it correlates but it got me wondering. The soy supplements apparently have a lot of vito-estrogens and stuff like that which maybe had something to do with the emotional health. I'm speculating of course but to me, it seems uncanny.

FruityLlama, I have seen SOME vegans who don't have those issues, I don't know what creates the disparity except some are better-nourished, eating more in line with their bodies' needs and metabolism, and others aren't. In the video I posted, Ocean is talking about his mind wandering off, and that absentmindedness can also be a product of vegan done wrong. On the other hand, when it's done RIGHT, well.... Everyone know Annette Larkins?! The emphasis on RAW and enzyme-rich foods is critical, I think.

Yes thats true. I don't know enough about food and that to know anything for sure, but it makes sense that some people are just not doing it the way that benefits them the most. Of course there are meat eaters and non vegans who are also unhealthy (was that said earlier in the thread?) and vice versa.
I always said to my friend though that I would only consider changing my diet when I had ample time to do it. Its like an entire conversion and change in lifestyle after all, not simply swapping one foodstuff to another. So it must take a lot of careful consideration and not something that anyone should or could impose on someone over night.
Dayum Annette, if that is the result of A* veganism then good on her!!

Its like an entire conversion and change in lifestyle after all, not simply swapping one foodstuff to another. So it must take a lot of careful consideration and not something that anyone should or could impose on someone over night. Right, especially moving to a higher-fiber diet, the system needs time to adjust. A lot of vegan meat and cheese substitutes are also very artificial and difficult to digest. And just...unappetizing to me. However men in particular seem to need something to sink their teeth into, and veggie burgers fit the bill nicely. I am fairly obsessed with fresh food. I think a freshly-made tortilla is a lot more satisfying and soul-feeding than one taken out of a package. Ditto for freshly cooked beans, fresh-from-the-garden vegetables, etc. So if a person feels deprived moving from omnivore to vegan, all the sensory richness of having a cooked-from-scratch meal can provide a new satisfaction. I think a good smoothie, presented in a pretty mason jar with a thick, colorful straw, is a lot more satisfying and interesting than an ice cream cone. Last night I made a beautiful pina colada smoothie with fresh coconut cream that I had prepared beforehand, frozen pineapple and banana, some brazil nuts, vanilla........it turned out so well that handing a glass of this to my husband, I felt like it was an invitation to dine like royalty. Sometimes vegan food really does taste like the best food ever. Especially when coconuts are involved.

That was beautifully described Ava , my mouth is watering! <3 I wish I could cook, I always do it wrong. I can make good cocktails though! Oh that just reminded me... what about vegan ALCOHOL?? I remember my friend talking about that too, specifically in terms of beer. I've never tried vegan versions, I suspect there is no difference in taste.

It's sometimes Gilmore Girls references, or Blackadder, Allo Allo, etc. For some reason, I had, "The mailman finally got organized, huh?" pop into my head yesterday, which made no sense whatsoever. None. It's from GG, when a guy Lorelai has been set up with, talks about the Dobermans he had when he was younger, and mentioned they were no longer with them. One that my sister loves is, " Normal! Perfectly normal!" From a movie. I think it was Dracula, Dead and Loving It.

Violets could you please move it to the Garden? I have had my mini rant, and would like to keep it more light. Including recipes 😉 Up the wall with work and assignments, and mommie/wife duties 😌 I'll reply properly in a few days. Loving that Pina Colada Ava, I love coconut sooo much yum. I'll share my russian-style bacon-free pea soup (secret is Liquid Smoke, imported all the way from USA) 😅😍

Btw the now-disgraced Sarma Melngailis ("The Vegan Queen") of NYC's Pure Food and Wine has the BEST recipe for almond milk this world has ever seen. I can't remember which of her recipe books I got it from, and I've altered the proportions. But something really magical happens when you mix almonds, water, extra virgin coconut oil, vanilla, raw agave nectar, and maybe even a bit of stevia in a blender together. I used to blend the almonds and water and then strain it through cheesecloth or a nut milk bag. Now I don't even bother...I have a Vita-Mix which renders the almond particles tiny enough that they are fine to drink. I can't imagine how they could put animal products into alcohol. Except maybe honey mead? Does anyone even drink that? Edit: Oh and the worm in the tequila!

AvaMy mum used to make honey mead. It is lovely when bubbly but it tended to have a mind of its own once bottled haha and when its flat its not as nice. Blackberry wine is now our fave ^_^ Lindisfarne, Northumberland, England produces mead still but its a bit spirit-like. They do loads of variants and flavours of it but its like glorified flat sherry or something.

One of my best friends has gradually given up one animal food after another until finally, now she is vegan.
For now I believe it's still a nutritionally risky diet. Also, if animals are well cared-for, I don't see the harm in taking milk and eggs....people provide for farm animals, maybe they have their own spirit of generosity and are willing to provide for us in return?

Has anyone seen the riveting film - 'Cowspiracy"? It is available on Netflix which is where I saw it. It features the famous China Study - a research project conducted by the govt of China and Cornell University..
I found a short version of it on YOU TUBE
-
Other than the humane reasons for not eating meat, there is the irrefutable fact that climate change cannot be dealt with if we eat meat the way we are. Eating meat once a week could be sustainable given other factors. Best not to eat at all.

@astrokeen
Thanks...I can't watch all of that, I start getting miserable and hopeless. I am mostly vegetarian and can enjoyably make it through the day as a vegan. The rest of my family is not on board however. So that's where I have work to do...need to prioritize cooking more and make responsible food appealing so that it "sells itself" to my picky eaters.

One of my best friends has gradually given up one animal food after another until finally, now she is vegan. - Wow that's great @ava !!! I wish I had a vegan friend, I actually knew in person "For now I believe it's still a nutritionally risky diet."- Like any other diet, in fairness. It is up to us to make sure our meals are balanced and nutritional, whether you are vegan, vegetarian or meatatarian (it's an actual word, haha). Just as an example I'll use US, where almost 40% of population is obese (this number is taken from www.cdc.gov/obesity/data/adult.html ; 2015-2016), who more likely follow a "normal", yet "nutritionally risky" diet. National Health Service (UK) Vegan Diet www.nhs.uk/live-well/eat-well/the-vegan-diet/World Health Organisation Healthy Eating www.who.int/news-room/fact-sheets/detail/healthy-dietIt is up to us to make sure we eat well. "Also, if animals are well cared-for, I don't see the harm in taking milk and eggs....people provide for farm animals, maybe they have their own spirit of generosity and are willing to provide for us in return?"Lets say, no male chicks were harmed and they have a great life running around your back yard. Also you don't mind the health risks and the fact that egg is technically a shelled menstruation that came from hens "vaganus" (yes, they lay eggs, poop and urine from the same hole), then the other reason why vegans won't eat it is that chickens eat their own eggs. Basically, they do so to get back the calcium that they lost in production of the egg.

I haven't seen the documentary yet, but I'll look it up on Netflix <3

Great, midnight. The weight loss itself would be motivation enough, other than showing compassion to animals and addressing climate change. In some developing countries, eating meat occasionally (or eggs and milk more regularly) is thought to be essential for people's nutritional uptake. Trying to find alternatives is not viable. In those instances, self care takes precedence.
