To initiate this subforum... "Smudging your sacred space, your home or office, or even your body with sage is like taking an energetic shower, or doing a deep metaphysical cleansing. The smoke from dried sage actually changes the ionic composition of the air, and can have a direct effect on reducing our stress response. Smudging is ritual alchemy — changing and shifting the air element, and transforming our current experience to a mystical one. The use of incense and other smoke and vapor to connect humans to the spirit world, can be easily traced throughout the East in parts of Asia and even dating as far back to Ancient Greece. The use of dried white sage however, is a 2,000 year old Indigenous American practice. The shamans used dried sage plants on their fires as a ritual of calling upon ancestral spirits. Any conflict, anger, illness or evil was absorbed by the sage smoke to be released or cleansed from the energy field of a person. Next, sweet grass would be burned to call forth the energy of peace and love. This ancient shamanic mystical ritual is a simple one to incorporate into your daily or weekly routine, or any time you feel like you might need a little aura polishing. You can never really smudge too much! Some ideal (or necessary) times to sage smudge your aura and/or space would be: When you move into a new living space When you begin a new job or start your own business Before and after a guest enters your home Before and after a yoga or healing session Before meditation After an argument or any illness Upon returning home from crowded situations" More here: www.mindbodygreen.com/0-17875/a-sage-smudging-ritual-to-cleanse-your-aura-clear-your-space.html----- I've never smudged with sage. Have you? Does it work?

I'm thinking of doing this when I move into my new place this fall. But really mundane things get in the way - such as, I'm scared of setting off the smoke alarm. :/ Violets has done this, I believe? Do you have any tips for us?

Aw... 😊 Hitting up my Leo Asc again, heh. Yes, I do this all the time. If it's above freezing, I try to open all of the windows and possibly doors... Not only because it helps with smoke alarms, but also (in theory/belief) allows openings for unwanted spirits and "energies" as the case may be, to exit.
I usually recite prayers or play mantras from YouTube while I do this, and speak out loud that "No negative energy is allowed to enter here. No negative energy is allowed to reside here. No negative spirits are allowed to enter or reside here", etc. as you choose.
I did set off the smoke alarm the other day, but it's super cold here, so no windows were open and my sage got a little...um, exuberant. 😬

Interestingly, I use a combination of different religious/spiritual prayers and mantras when I smudge. Whatever speaks to each person, I think? Edit. I also call in all Angels, Guides, and spiritual Teachers and ask that they be present with me, particularly if I feel that there's a negative energy about the place (which is usually why I smudge in the first place).

Right, I might just use an affirmation-type prayer.. Easier to concentrate on the message that way. Thanks, Violets!

@icequeen Sorry to go on and on, but you know... Another pleasant way to spiff up the energy in a place (if it has carpet) is to combine a mixture of baking soda and a pleasant herb (preferably one you've picked, but otherwise whatever works) like rosemary or lavender, or add essential oils if you have them handy. Sprinkle the way you would carpet freshener, leave for a little while, and vacuum it up. Herbs and plants are powerful in so many lovely ways...

That sounds real good too! Don't have the ingredients for that, but if I do get my hands on them.. Will definitely try this out.

Yeah, I realize that not everyone has the odd collection of stuff that I have, lol. It's just that I do this stuff on a regular basis, it's a major part of my lifestyle, and although my husband appreciates it, his Mercury square Saturn isn't exactly keen on having a conversation about it...so when something comes up somewhere like here, I'm like "OMG...!!!"

Oh yeah, I get you.. Not odd at all, well at least, not to me. <3 Just not in a position to have much stuff at all, ya know? Essentials oils and the like.. Expensive stuff. Matter of fact, I don't even have baking soda. Translation: If I could, I would like to have that stuff too.

I know what you mean. I belong to a FB group that talks a lot about DYI stuff, and people are like "well why don't you just use _______?!" Like I have money to have whatever it is handy (which I don't at the moment, I've just built up a collection of oils and herbs, and buy baking soda cheap in bulk). 😕

Haha.. Sorry, didn't mean to put you on the spot. Was just clarifying my earlier statement - that it's not coz I think it's odd, that's all.

Do you have any tips for us? That's what I always wonder about. The smoke alarm! Plus my husband hates New Age stuff. It's a major mission in my life to learn to be as New Age as possible, undetected. Scorpio NN ---> secretly secretive I do have one sage-burning/cleansing story but it's weird, long, and sad. I'll think if I can make it more normal, short, and happy. Hmmm

Also, Ava ... Sorry I didn't pop in here earlier, I'm so happy about this forum. Thank you for bringing it up and helping it to manifest. <3 Thank you, I'm happy about it, too! Thanks for being so knowledgeable on these matters, I have so much to learn from you. <3 I'd love to have my energy as clear as yours. Currently I am so mysteriously weighed down, not depressed or sad but just very heavy feeling, slow thinking, cautious. Anyway.... Gonna vacuum with baking soda and lavender essential oil today. Lavender is so common I had thought it was boring, but as time goes by I seem to acquire a stronger and stronger "appetite" for it. Speaking of essential oils, I wonder if Clary Sage oil has any of the same effects as burning sage? I don't even know if it's the same plant. Must research that.

Ava <3 <3 I wish my energy were as clear as you're thinking it is, lol. I have to work every day to clear it out, as I tend to collect crap (my favorite word, you know) from just reading stuff on the internet. It's like I have zero tolerance for any type of anger or agitation at this point, and any that I allow myself to dwell on for more than about a minute ends up throwing my energy out of whack. But for sage... Clary Sage (which I loooove) I don't think it works the way that white sage does. It is usually relaxing as an aromatherapy thing, but when I looked it up a while back, it was said that its name derived from using the plant to clear mucous from the eye or something (it basically means "clear eye). But I still use it in my bath water, and in my carpet freshener because I find it calming. But hey, you could try it as a substitute? I think there are spray bottles of oils that are sold in replacement of burning sage, but I'm not sure what they contain.

I've tried it twice. Once, when my cats were dying in 2011. Four of them died within a month, from a virus. Dennis was still alive at the time. It was about me, and my family, as well, though. Unfortunately, it didn't help. That was a few months before everything went to hell at home.
I tried again in November 2013, when my dad was bringing my sister back home from a trip to see her husband. I had to leave it in the sink, because it wasn't held together properly, and it was smoking away. The house filled with smoke. I ran water on it, but of course, it smoked all the more for a while. I ran around opening windows and doors - it was freezing. I don't think it helped, but then nothing seemed to help. I've felt cursed.
I bought another sage stick, and a candle and oil from a place in Canton, when my dad was sued over an accident we were in five years ago, but I ended up not using the candle, or the sage. I was afraid of making things worse, accidentally. I had some little individual white sage leaves that I burned every so often, on a dish, but I don't know where they are now.
My sister bought me a space clearing book, after finding my old amazon wish list late last year. I still need to do a big clear-out, but I'm terrible. I hold onto all sorts of things, like my grandmother. And dad cleared out too much of mum's stuff in his grief, last year. I wasn't ready to go through it, and was then upset when I found that he'd given all of her clothes away (that weren't in the laundry baskets with mine), and books that I'd bought her (including a huge, beautiful Wind In The Willows *cries*). My sister was upset, too. He went into default mode at the time, as he did when anything huge happened: get rid of anything associated with it, and move on. Only you don't just move on from this.
I didn't mean to be depressing. I think of the sage, every so often, but I'm out of practice with so much that I used to be interested in.

Oops, *like my grandmother *did*. I don't have my grandmother packed away somewhere.
The sage I have is from 2014. It's sage and cedar.

Hi everyone. This is my first real post. (v2t, btw..ill get it in my signature) I started using sage to cleanse my tarot deck. I became addicted to cleansing the space around me; using my hands the way the Natives do to bring it into my aural space (is that a thing? You know what I mean). I'm totally addicted. I have two jobs and one involves interacting with the public quite as bit. I don't even think about it on those days. I light up and clean up. I buy my sage from different places, I like to make an adventure and kind of a spiritual mission (where I am more open to redirection along the way) when I get my sage from the Native Reservation. I take back roads named Foot, and Ditch Road . It's lovely. It's also interesting how I'll burn sage and play meditative music and one by one my children come into my room and just flop on the bed, the floor, everywhere...my very timid cat sneaks in and secures a spot under my alter where I'm burning sage and candles and reading.. Totally addicted..perfect way to open this forum, by burning a sage stick. Bless
