A rather spooky draw, right? A lot of the times I see The Lovers contrasted against The Devil, but it seems the Hierophant is the polar opposite of the Devil when it comes to imagery.
My thoughts: this person has carnal, obsessive feelings but tempers them with the desire to do things in a traditional, almost conservative type of way?
How would you interpret this??

I thought the same thing. They want to do the right thing. Either that, or someone's feeling tempted to do something.

Wants to do what they feel is right but feels trapped or anxious about doing so. Like the chains in the devil are loose, so they can break free if they wish, but are anxious and fearful.
Pls dnt quote

I had similar thoughts as vg. For me it has the touch of: The feelings are stuck in the old system.

When I saw the title of the thread, my immediate thought was what athena and anela said. Passions that are in conflict with traditional values or societal expectations. It does feel like a "resisting temptation" combination to me. That was my immediate thought, but of course they could also be feeling trapped by traditional values, kind of along the lines of what vg and whisperix said. But my first thought was the first one.

Because I don't want to project my own disdain for societal expectations in there, I'll just throw in the idea that it's also possible that they have unhealthy passions they keep in check by adhering to a higher set of ethical and moral standards? This seems less likely to me, but still possible? Anyway, yes an interesting combination!

Actually I can totally see that.. like someone that indulged too much in "something" in the past and now adheres to some kind of religion (/ethical and moral standards as you said) out of maturity now? That resonates for sure given the person at hand!
