You guys ever experience this in synastry?
It's such a ghostly aspect to me. In spite of the palpable lust, the ability to "see" something in the other and bring out their drive, the fact that your life trajectory may change after meeting this person.. nothing romantic ever seems to pan out.
Why is that?
I have a tight DW in synastry with someone. On paper, everything is perfect. Two years apart in age, same religion, both athletes, same major, mental connection in sync, same outlook on life, both were single at the time, there was interest on both sides.. yet nothing ever materialized.
Now I have a boyfriend (we don't have this in synastry) and funnily enough because of him I've began pondering this aspect again. Every now and then he wistfully mentions this girl of yore. We all do this to some extent, which is fine. But finally I decided to take it upon myself to look up her birthday (she's married), plug in their synastry, and VOILA.
Mars conjunct North Node double whammy there too!
They're also compatible in all the classic ways. Both into obscure things, the arts, outcasts, similar upbringing, were both interested in each other, etc. Yet they never ended up together.
Now I was reading earlier on some vedic site that (believe it or not) Mars conjunct the South Node in synastry is actually quite good, as the South Node drains the "malefic" Martian energy and converts it into something positive. In vedic astrology the North Node is seen as a malefic a la Saturn weirdly enough.
Thoughts/experiences?

Hmm, interesting thoughts, however I haven`t made the same Observation. In fact I just recently noticed that the Mars aspecting NN in Composite happens in quite a few relationships (and in synastry the square seemed to come up frequently). (usually conjunction, occasionally square)

That is interesting Ceri! In both cases Mars was also tightly conjunct the NN in the composite, but weirdly enough they were both out-of-sign, tight conjunctions. I wonder if that flavors the "incompletion" differently?

That's an interesting coincidence athena - both you and your boyfriend have known someone with whom you have Mars-NN DW. I can't think of anyone I have known whose Mars is conjunct my NN. Their Scorpio Mars would probably not be too impressed with my flighty Gemini Mars.

It might be a bit of an individual thing, too.
Personally I might feel a resonance to this aspect, as I have Mars conjunct NN natally. Though I cannot remember having had the DW in synastry as a conjunction. curiously I mostly noticed the conjunction in the composite, sometimes the square, and in synastry I`ve seen some square-nodal axis-connections rather than the conjunction.

Truly though in both cases the Mars themselves are not necessarily in harmony (A Taurus /Libra Mars and an Aquarius/Pisces Mars respectively), but maybe something tangible would have panned out if so? Harrison Ford and Calista Flockhart have the aspect one way and the aspect does seem to have agreed with them over time

I should look at other hard aspect cases in my past and see what became of those relationships. It would definitely add some more complexity to this 'study' lol

Those two have had the ability to joke and make lighthearted, absurd comments to break the ice or offset tension....something my Gem Mars appreciates. Air Mars appreciates whatever moves the energy along and keeps things fresh. So yes, I like this in family synastry....might work out nicely in a romantic connection. I do think Mars/Mars synastry is important, after having such a hard time in a long term relationship of Mars square Mars, and such a pleasant time with Mars trine Mars. Maybe my view is distorted by limited experience, though. Funny you mention Calista, she went to the same high school as my college boyfriend (whose Mars was square mine.) Her Scorpio sun trine Harrison's..... Yeah I like simple trines a lot, personal evolution be damned, life is hard enough without hard squares in synastry.

I like trines, too, However without some Tension aspects, no spark would be lit. You wouldnt´t even get to the stage of considering romantic/ sexual potential.
Depends on the nature of the squares, too of cousre. Some are nicer than others. mars trines are pretty cool though, as they Combine the energy nature of Mars with the harmonious flow of a trine.

Why is that? Two years later I'm back to update this with a new development - I spent last new years eve with someone born two weeks after the person I had mentioned in this post. Naturally we also have a Mars/North Node double whammy in synastry. Long story short: I met up with an online friend in a different country and she and I had such an incredible night, maybe one of the best nights of my life. Of course a couple days later I had to come back to the States and I have no idea when I'll ever be in that country again, let alone see her. But that night has left an impression on me. And I think there is something about this DW aspect that will always keep the person out of reach, yet they'll leave this really indelible effect on your psyche permanently. Just my 2¢
