Asteroid Nymphe: Sex Positivity and Our Embodied Identification with Sense of Place and Naturalness
Posted on October 18, 2016by intimatesky
In some ancient myths, nymphs could not survive if they were severed from their place of origin; if their tree were cut down, or their water source dried up. A nymph is inextricable from the natural world.
In our society, people who embody the Nymphe archetype (usually having asteroid Nymphe prominent in their chart somehow) who have been cut off from meaningful, sustained relationship with natural places, often seek the natural realm within other human beings, and in sexual experiences of all descriptions (nymphomania), for it is only natural that they would need to feel the dynamic and abundant flow of energy which nature can provide, and in a concrete jungle, this comes gushing in for them most readily through sexual intimacy with other breathing humans. (Or perhaps they like to kiss trees on boulevards sometimes (I have Nymphe opposite my Moon–this is something I have done!).
The energy of the earthly place of their true belonging would give them the sense of peace which they are seeking through sex. On the other side of the coin, true freedom to be as sexual and wild as they like would also bring satisfaction! Nymphomania is considered pathological, but it doesn’t need to be a problem to want as much sex as you want, as much embodied presence as possible. But Nymphe people seem to absolutely require that grounding (and exhilirating) connection with nature, because of the high charge of their energy, or else they feel untethered and can be a bottomless pit, never satisfied.
Nymphe is often at least a little flighty, and the earth is their sacred partner, who holds and cradles them as they go wild… just like a truly safe sexual partner, who embodies that natural place for them, and whom she can love just as she loves the trees, the river, and the stars, dancing freely and kissing the rain drops.
Nymphe is variously referred to by astrologers as indicating nymphomania (sex addiction), a strong and profound resonance with nature and natural energies, and one who is quite free with their sexual energy; quite liberated to express it. That she is a point in the chart which could represent all three is likely, for these three things are not mutually exclusive; as with any heavenly body, she can mean many things at once, and a lot of different and unique things to different people, depending on the specific ways in which she turns up in our natal chart.
A square to Nymphe from Saturn could indicate a distinct and quite pronounced responsibility to harness and ground the sexual energy, one which could be over-emphasized if Saturn is stressed. This could manifest as repression of the free flow of sexual energy, or a career in sex work, for Saturn is the tangible, visible, lived reality of the person and variously allows for freedom and creates various hardships and restrictions. Nymphe is often found on the Midheaven of sex workers and those who make money on sex– the Midheaven has a resonance with Saturn, as visible manifestation of our work and our lives on Earth.
I believe the key to a healthy Nymphe lies in the properties of the essential meaning of the word, as well as all of the mythology surrounding nymphs.
1.
a mythological spirit of nature imagined as a beautiful maiden inhabiting rivers, woods, or other locations.
synonyms: sprite, sylph, spirit
“a nymph with winged sandals”
literary
a beautiful young woman.
synonyms: girl, belle, nymphet, sylph, ingénue; More
2.
an immature form of an insect that does not change greatly as it grows, e.g., a dragonfly, mayfly, or locust.
an artificial fly made to resemble the aquatic nymph of an insect, used in fishing.
3.
a mainly brown butterfly that frequents woods and forest glades.
Here we have the definition of nymphomaniac which google turns up:
“Nymphomaniac- a woman who has abnormally excessive and uncontrollable sexual desire.”
Now, this is interesting, in that it is a word which has been coined only in regards to women. We notice there is no word for abnormal and excessive sexual desire in men. It is not considered abnormal for men’s sexual desire to be uncontrollable, but in women this is considered a dire fault. This is a key for our deeper astrological understanding, as well as our de-programming from oppressive cultural mores, and a liberation into the true meaning of this archetype.
My definition of a nymphomaniac, as a holistic astrologer, is somebody who deeply embodies the elements of asteroid Nymphe in their natal chart, or who has a challenged asteroid Nymphe (other placements could obviously turn out a diagnosis of nymphomania as well). A nymphomaniac, or rather I should say, one who struggles with sex addiction, who is self-identified as a sex addict and wants help, could potentially be one who lacks the essential grounding influence of physical nature, or who has been divorced from their essential connection to their own inner nature/their imaginary realm of play and fantasy, and so they constantly seek release through sex, which is the kind of physicality, the kind of fantasy, too, which most closely resembles the abundant energy of a forest or lake, and of that lost imaginal realm, in our vitality-starved, logic-laden modern world… An imbalance always calls for a re-balancing, and so here I offer an avenue for deep peace and satisfaction for Nymphe charged individuals.
The word ‘nymph’s’ etymology is as follows:
late Middle English: from Old French nimphe, from Latin nympha, from Greek numphē ‘nymph, bride’; related to Latin nubere ‘be the wife of.’
So a Nymphe person is perhaps somebody who especially feels the need for essential grounding–to be married, in some circles, is to be liberated to feel abundant and unlimited sexual desire with the one to whom one is devoted and in whom they find their grounding. And because of the further meaning of the world nymph, explained below, we see that this marriage is actually with, and within natural places; to be married to a particular place is a very nymph-like thing to do, mythologically. And this place can actually be an inner place, and she can have as many partners as she likes, so long as she is grounded in her own sense of numinous self, and unmolested in that natural space of being exactly who she is and wants to be at any given moment… a place she is free, and to which she is wedded, all at once.
It is so interesting that in popular culture nymphs have been depicted as flighty and independent… and they are always, always in a natural place. They can either become trees, or they are trees, or they belong with a particular dell, or pool, or forest. They turn into all manner of natural things, because they are wedded to those places… a sacred marriage.
Nymphs have also been depicted as seductive and desirable, but unattainable, and this is part of the disease of modern culture; wanting what you can not have. And Nymphe people sometimes have this in spades. They are attracting unwanted attention, or they are attracted to those who are wildly inappropriate, who might take them out of their natural habitat, where they would dry up and die. If you actually ‘attain’ a Nymphe person, they wither before your eyes. They can’t be possessed, or taken out of their natural environment (sometimes this isn’t a physical place, but an inner way of being), or they will change form, wither and die… you have to meet them where they are, appreciate them in their element… or they will not be at all the beautiful and free being whom you loved at first.
So many of us feel the pain of Nymphe in the modern age. Those with Nymphe aspecting the lights (Sun and Moon) and angles might feel it more acutely because their essence is Nymphe-like. If the Moon is aspected, their deep somatic being is in tune with Nymphe energy, and so absolutely requires the same kind of energetic outlet that a nymph needs. Jumping, running, playing, hiding, giggling… having sex… but most importantly, being in nature, being totally free to be themselves, and to feel totally wedded to that way of being…
Where is Nymphe in your chart? How does this theme resonate with you? I’d be fascinated to hear!
