I researched this a short while ago in order to understand the dangers they posed not only environmentally, to our health but also to social and economic justice.
They increase the use of herbicides and pesticides: contrary to claims, pesticide use has increased. This has been due to the spread of pesticide and herbicide-resistant weeds. The use of chemicals and pesticides causes soil and environmental degradation, increasing pest problems and pesticide-induced poisoning.
High cost of seeds with an additional cost for chemicals – costs that have driven farmers in developing countries into poverty. Farmer suicides increased after Bt cotton was introduced into India in 1995, while coorporations made huge profits.
High toxicity kills insects and non-target organisms: Increased use of herbicides leads to eradication of broadleaved plants, leading to a consequent reduction in various species of insects and birds, which depend upon these plants for their food and habitats. GM crops incorporate toxins directed towards certain pests, but these toxins are exuded from the entire plant body and can kill non-target organisms, including soil microbes.
Contamination of other plants: Because of the instability of alien genes, the likelihood of gene transmission known as horizontal gene transfer to other plants is greater. The behaviour of these genes in hosts is uncertain and may disrupt ecological and physiological functions. The future of sustainable agriculture may be irreversibly jeopardised through contamination by GM crops.

I myself have wondered about GM crops in the past and have been scared of the concept of them, but when I look at the current research out there, it all seems to state that GM food is safe and that there doesn't seem to be any harmful long-term effects. I just don't know how true that is though...

Wow man! And the US is also by far the largest GMO producer in the world, with the most GMO farms anywhere in the world. I'm going to read about that. Thanks for the link Faith.

The first two links above represent the GM company and lobby. While the info gram opposes it. I am so averse to GM, that I recently refused a gift of candy from the US. GM animal feed, unfortunately, is being used in Europe, which I avoid as I don't eat meet. There are some very good documentaries worth watching on Netflix. Also this site has a few brief videos plus latest round up (excuse the pun) of research: www.gmwatch.org/en/

Yes Just getting the info from the horse's own mouth, to offset any feeling that the opposition is merely distorting the facts or figures. LOL "round up"...I like the pun. Thanks for your link. @bonsai Yeah, poor U.S. with all the crazy agriculture. Well it's a reflection of our whole dysfunctional value system & corporate rule. Nice to see you here!
