Would be awesome and I've long wanted to do it.
I have tried in the past by asking them a question and just scribbling down anything that came into my head. I was advised to try this technique for a few days till my writing began to make sense without my volition but I never got to that point. Instead, I found it frustrating. Meditation didn't help either.
Just last week, I came across a mystic on a forum who is also an advanced occultist. He recommended a book which I've ordered and, hopefully, this will help me. The mystic communicates with spirits easily and developed the ability only in recent months. He travelled far in 1 year - from being a sceptic to someone who appears to have mastered the occult arts. He uses spirits, of which there are many, to perform tasks or assist him in other ways. He justifies the use of spirits in this way:
"The occult, trantric, taoist and kabbalist philosophies say that all realms are divine and we should master them all on the path of our eternal evolution. They recognize non-duality without the rejection of duality.
Power is like a hammer. You can build a house for the homeless or you can kill somebody. Ultimately, power manifests one's values into the world. If your values are love, beauty and truth, the world is better for your power. The Gita says it's not what you do, but why you do it."
I am intrigued. Communication with a spirit guide would be amazing at the very least.

^ Hmm, I'm not quite sure about his philosophy, but I'm glad you've found a way that seems promising. Do tell us how it turns out...
:ETA: Not sure as in, I just don't fully get the context. Maybe just the brain fog.

12YearsABlob , I think how one affects change is also important, in addition to the 'why'. Sorry, I used one quote out of his long post, which doesn't present the whole picture. Occultists use spirits, the thought of which scares people, including me. Operating in any manner in the astral realms could be dangerous in my view. He distinguished between mystics and clairvoyants which I found helpful. Mystics have direct knowing - they know intuitively or intellectually, while clairvoyants know through their senses - they see, hear, feel etc. I have experienced direct knowing during a healing course, but I do not see things.

Have you tried afformations? I like them more than affirmations. I start with: wouldn't it be nice..... and wait for the answer.
like wouldn't it be nice to talk to spirit guides? Answer: Yesss. Then I connect it to my personal real life: wouldn't it be nice that I talk to spirit guides every morning when I wake up? Answer: No, I have difficulties to open my eyes. Therefore I do not understand a word they say. ^^^^^^The mind will answer the question and I can work on the topic. In this case I do not hear the guides, because I have other things on my mind and other things to do.
A different way to tune in is to work with frequency. Just tune into the frequency of your spirit guide, like music, a tone(e.g. , e.t.c. “If you want to find the secrets of the universe, think in terms of energy, frequency and vibration.” Nikola Tesla
