I saw a very interesting documentary yesterday - The Reality of Truth -
A guy, Zappy Zapolin (a techie billionaire) investigates whether plant based drinks/substances mentioned in the bible (manna from Heaven) and the Rig Veda (Soma), could enable one to experience higher conscious states and be spiritually transformative. The upshot is yes, indeed they can. He travels to Peru with a group of people who participate in shamanic rituals and drink San Pedro made from an ancient cactus used for shamanic healing. The experiences described are impressive.
Since this documentary film (March 2017) received awards and has been viewed widely, it appears that the shamanic healing has become much sought after. I would certainly like to travel to Peru and experience it. I wonder if any of our members are Peruvian.

There seem to be two plants used in Latin America - San Pedro in the Andes mountains and Ayahuasca in the Amazon. Found a credible documentary on Ayahuasca:
Both plants, referred to as teacher plants, are attributed with healing properties and the power to make spiritual breakthroughs. There is a proliferation of You Tube Ayahuasca video diaries on the very same.
I'm interested in both plants as the experiences are somewhat distinct - will have to travel to the Amazon as well as the Andes.

Can't thank you enough, @astrokeen . I love when it comes true that the best things in life are free This is one of the most excellent and important documentaries I've ever seen. Around 14:00, a discussion of Jesus and mushrooms begins. Reminds me of a book I once got from the library: Still watching...

I have been watching You Tube videos and reading accounts about Ayahuasca and San Pedro and am astonished at the visions and experiences people have had. There are, however, a few accounts where drinking Ayahuasca (the more difficult of the two) caused psychosis. A scary thought! But the majority experienced similar states of knowing which related to the dimensions they encountered. Descriptions of these dimensions are given in the video I posted above. These appear to be accessed in a linear fashion with people progressing from lower to higher dimensions. In the 7th dimension one encounters great luminous beings - masters and archangels. Wow!

As it turns out I also have the option to try Ayahuasca closer to home. It is permitted in Holland and a few other European countries, but is illegal in the UK. The church of Santo Daime, which integrates use of Ayahuasca into Christian services, originated in Brazil and have set up a church in Amsterdam. So that is where I am headed to first. Will report back in 2 weeks. Was cheered to read that the long term effects of Ayahuasca on the brain are similar to effects of meditation. kahpi.net/ayahuasca-interacts-brain/

Ava , it didn't go well, in the sense that I had built up huge expectations of a breakthrough of some kind. I prepared by meditating, setting my intention, eating the right things, etc. On the very day I was a little fearful and I prayed to Archangel Michael, someone I have a relationship with, to be present and protect me from harm. I also placed myself in a bubble of protective light. Generally people report that the first day, more often than not, is a detox (purging) day which can be very uncomfortable. Well, that is what occurred. I partook of the tea, Ayahuasca, twice and each time it lead to me feeling sick and heavy with body aches. It was deeply exhausting and draining, which was eased somewhat by throwing up. This took place during a meditation held by the Church of Santo Daime. That part was fine, and the singing was beautiful and uplifting. The singing may have provided the healing which made me feel normal again as the effects of Ayahuasca wore off. I had been hoping for so much more than the detox effect but nothing came my way. I also wondered whether my body had rejected the medicine rather than the medicine working to purge me. A healer at the service said that she sensed a wall around me which was blocking the medicine. I wonder if that was a bad thing. Could it be that Micael protected me and I was not to enter the realms of visions. Could the opening of these portals have been damaging in some way? Or maybe Ayahuasca did indeed provide a detox of sorts and provided healing which I am not yet aware of. Which it was, I will never know.

@astrokeen,
Thanks so much for sharing those details of your experience. I'm sorry it didn't go at all like you had hoped. But yes, perhaps you were protected from it (?) It crossed my mind that maybe the bubble of protective light was actually so effective, it became "the wall" around you?

I asked my old time friend who channels Michael for a message. This is what it was:
"Do not worry that any particular method must be the same for you as for others. In this case the benefits have been in a greater understanding of your own needs and what is most suitable for you. Always be prepared to move on! You do not need to persevere with anything that does not bring you comfort or insight or understanding. It is important to care for yourself and protect your physical vessel. You may find the enlightenment, healing and recovery through many other means.
Allow the protection not only to encircle you but also to guide you."
Very nice and sensible. Very Michael. So, it was the protection that rejected the brew in this instance, which I am OK with. I have since since come across many accounts which talk about possessions and deceptions emerging from taking the medicine without the right guidance/shamans. Some people point out that one can become hooked into visions from a lower astral plane. So, for now, no shortcuts.
