I've heard from some places that a planet making an very tight aspect to another can easily alter the expression of that planet. For example, an Aqua Mercury trine Pluto by 3 degrees will still have noticable aquarian traits, but if that Aqua Mercury is conjunct Mars under 30 minutes this influence of Mars can influence Mercury so much that it overshadows the Aquarian expression.
What do you think?

If that occcurs, couldn't it work both ways in that either could overshadow the other? What would be the pecking order in terms of strength/dominance, although admittedly Mercury would be a pushover.

the rule of thumb is, that the slower planet modifies the faster one, that is especially noteable when you come to Jupiter, SAturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto. (personal planets among themselves are modifying each other more clearly, the reason is that they are symbolising very personal traits/ forces, while the outer ones do not; like Venus representing our approach to love and relating) Especially conjunctions of planets to personal planets or the angles modify the expression: however they do not override the basic signbackground, but make a combination. For example my Sun is in Sagittarius conjunct Mercury. My Sun is certainly imbued with Mercurial things and my core personality revolves around that communicating/ thinking/ writing/ talking/ analyzing mercurial vibe, however it does not mean it loses the Sag-background. it just means that this need for analyzing things is expressed in a Sagittarian way. And no this conjunction does make me neither a Gemini nor a Virgo. Though honestly speaking, if you have an outer planet conjunct your personal one, you might sometimes seem to have traits of the sign this planet rules (so maybe there is a bit of gEmini/virgo in me after all due to this conjunction ). I can see that with my ASC (and Mars) conjunct Neptune - people used to often mistake me for a Pisces, but then again my chartruler is in Pisces anyway.

It creates an interesting and intense fusion, its own animal.
My husband has sun conjunct Uranus with less than half a degree orb. He is so eccentric, he makes other eccentrics look like conformists. And he has Aquarian tendencies, especially the fascination with electricity, technology, invention. He can have a bit of a superiority complex, not that any of you Aqua suns or moons have that 😱 but some Aquas do.
My Aqua moon best friend admits that she comes across as "haughty" and my husband can do the same.
But I wouldn't mistake him for an Aquarius. His Leo energy is obvious. For one thing, Leos seem to engage in a more bodily way than Aquas, who engage more on the mental level. It's hard to explain but it's like he emanates more heat, even in the most casual interaction...like he tends to toss off jokes to random people in stores, and as people laugh they often lean in towards each other. I feel like Aquas maintain their personal space more carefully, it's like they're surrounded by an air-conditioned bubble. Please don't quote
