I just remembered Jane Goodall, and how "In the shadow of man" was one of my growing up books. Have you read it? What are the books you grew up with?

The Witch and the Wardrobe! My favorite books as a pre teen were the Nancy Drew mysteries and the westerns by Zane Grey. An odd combo lol..
My all time favorite books are Gone With the Wind by Margaret Mitchell and Papillion by Henri Charrière; both read as a young teen.

Papillion by Henri Charrière; both read as a young teen. Wow, same here! In high school I read that and this one: (So fitting that a man whose last name is Stone would write a book that focuses heavily on sculpture, where many scenes take place in marble quarries.) Also, a Tree Grows in Brooklyn and as I said on another thread, The Bean Trees by Barbara Kingsolver. In junior high I was reading the Flowers in the Attic series by V.C. Andrews until my mother decided to pick up one of the books, looked at me sternly, and said I needed to stop. I just watched the trailer for the movie and it says, "The book you were forbidden to read"....hahah, yes. My friend's mother is the one who supplied these books, and in retrospect I'm amazed that she was so subversive, as she seemed so normal. My friend turned out very normal. I guess it shows the importance of keeping up appearances. I sure as hell wouldn't want my own daughter reading that.

My best friend's sister was really into Stephen King, and she insisted that I read Pet Cemetery, which bored me and wasn't scary at all. Then one day I rented the movie (VHS ) and watched it alone in my attic bedroom, and that was extremely scary. One of the few instances where I recommend a movie over a book.

I read the V.C. Andrew series as well including Petals in the Wind. I was and still when time permits, a heavy reader. Stephen King and Dean Koontz are best horror authors ! I enjoyed all the John Grisham ( a fellow Aquarian) and Robin Cooks books too. I never really met a book I didn`t like I worked in the High School library so had access to all the books first.

The books that took root for me the most as a teen were the Greek Tragedy "Antigone", and "Siddhartha" by Herman Hesse. Also "The Prophet" by Kahlil Gibran.
My phone won't do italics.

Hans Christian Anderson, and Grimm's Fairy Tales. The Enchanted Wood, Lion, Witch, and Wardrobe, so many. Sweet Valley High. I got into Dean Koontz when I was fourteen or fifteen - the one with the dog, Einstein. Watchers. Anne of Green Gables. James Herriot!

I was fascinated by Jacqueline Susann`s characters in all her books but read her Valley of the Dolls a dozen times. So risque for a `tween Ava, your Mama would have really scolded you for reading that book .
