Many aromatherapists and natural wellness folks are familiar with a certain notorious essential oil blend of ne're-do-wells past, a mysterious potion based on a recipe that originated in the 15th century. According to legend, the concoction was created by a group of four thieves® and grave robbers to protect themselves from contracting the plague while robbing the bodies of the ill and deceased. When apprehended, the thieves admitted to using the formula and disclosed the recipe in order to receive a less severe punishment for their crimes.
Whether or not this story is true, the essential oils in this blend may be beneficial during the winter months and are commonly used to freshen the air.
This is a classic recipe, but you can customize it by adjusting the proportions or adding other air-freshening essential oils such as tea tree, oregano, thyme, sage, ravensara, lavender, juniper berry, hyssop, bay laurel, or scotch pine.
Our Homemade Version of Four Thieves® Oil Blend
Ingredients
40 drops organic clove bud essential oil
35 drops organic lemon essential oil
20 drops fair trade organic cinnamon bark essential oil
15 drops organic eucalyptus essential oil
10 drops organic rosemary essential oil
Directions
Mix all essential oils together in a dark glass bottle.
This blend is very strong and must be diluted for safe use. The essential oil content should only account for 1 to 2% of the total formula. This means that when formulating homemade cleaning products or other creations, 6 to 12 drops of essential oil can be added per ounce of carrier oil or other menstruum.

Is anyone familiar with this essential oil? anela, justjuni?
I haven't bought the real Thieves oil yet. I had all the oils already, to make this homemade version. I put about 40 drops of the mixture in small blue spray bottles, fill the bottle halfway with witch hazel, and then fill it with water. (Witch hazel recommendation was given on a Martha Stewart site, so I assume it's safe...it helps the scent to linger.)
And I have it running in my diffuser now. My husband brings a spray bottle to work and claims it's saving him from catching sicknesses from people around him (coughing, sneezing people).
I'm running it in the diffuser now and like the smell...it's very cinnamon-y.
Whole Foods carries Medieval Mix which is much, much cheaper and said to accomplish the same thing. I bought that, but it's not as strong as the DIY Thieves, and I figure, the stronger the scent, the more effective against germs.
