Has anyone heard of it? What do you think the alternative reality is? Its creeped me out reading about it today haha. Will be back with details if no one has heard of it.
I thought it sounded like hallucinations but I dont know. Ew.

The Wikipedia article does not contain a good description of *how* to play it (which is good, I suppose). There are other places that have instructions, though. Is it urban legend or is there some truth to it? :edit: Not a fan of 'disturbing' other realms, even if there's only a 0.0001% chance it's true. I'd rather let them live in peace. Not poking the bearie.
There are a lot of accounts of people who claim to have tried it, with varying degrees of success. They advise against it. For some reason, I can't pinpoint when this thing started. If you find out, could you let us know? Coz I was thinking, if it started after that lady's death (Elisa), then maybe it was just a conspiracy theory to cover up the murder? Some footage from the night she disappeared is missing.

*Reading about it and feeling creeped out* And no, I won't try it. I am all for experiments, as long as I don't get scared

^ Same! I read too many anecdotes, freaked out, called my friend - and we both freaked out together. It reminds me of other (similar) games - like the hooded man thing (with the black cab, have you guys read it?). Or the hide and seek one. Yikes. Why why why? I mean, I guess know why. But it seems like way too much for too little reason. A jacked-up version of knocking on your neighbour's door and running away.

Apologies for freaking you both out! I found it morbidly fascinating to be honest haha! I meant to come back with detailed instructions but upon reflection I thought it might have been a bit weird for this forum. Or maybe not since I posted the topic anyway.. I couldn't decide haha! In case anyone else was wondering though, the long and short of it is you have to find a lift that has 10 or more floors, go to some floors in a particular order, at floor 5 a lady may get on with you. you must not acknowledge her in any way or...well this is the bit I don't get.. what happens? because after that you press floor 1 but it takes you to floor 10 and thats the alternate reality. Get off and explore at your own peril. Get back by going through the sequence in reverse. I don't understand what happens if you look at the lady though...the game is ruined right? What happens if you don't get off? Its too complicated for me but I wouldn't do it anyway because Im so freaked just reading it haha!! Its also slightly stupid though because how could a lift take you to another dimension... I read that the game originated in 2010 @12yearsablob so a few years before Miss Lam's unfortunate death. How sad Its sad that her death has been made into a story like this but I don't know, its a mystery in of itself with odd footage to boot so people will speculate I suppose. It apparently originated in Japan or Korea. I don't know much more yet though. Will post back if I find more!

When I say freaked, I mean freaked out AND fascinated. I am morbidly curious about this stuff myself. Nothing is 'too dark', don't worry. Went down an internet rabbit hole reading about this.
Right, and I read more about her death too - which brought me to the horrible history of the Cecil hotel. That took me down another rabbit hole. Long story short, her death is not connected with this game (as far as I can tell).
*But* it opened the doors to the very real, very disturbing past of the that hotel (which I'd also love to discuss with you guys if you don't mind).

Ugh thats also creepy but sometimes I wonder about the writers... I wonder if its aspiring writers using this to exercise their creativity or something. They write like theyre trying too hard Yeah, you know what - when I was reading this guy's anecdote (https://www.reddit.com/r/nosleep/comments/7vfmxb/do_not_play_the_elevator_game_words_of_a_big_time/) - that's what I was thinking!
It sounded like he was practisingwriting horror stories.
There's an update 1 and update 2 at the end of his story. Update 2 even ends on a cliffhanger, the way a horror movie would.
I hope for his sake what's written there is not true.
Summary: Dude tried the elevator game. Broke the rule of not looking at the woman. Woman followed him back, haunted him good n proper. Dude called a priest, lined apartment with salt, etc. Dude's friend tried the hooded man game (somehow at the same time the other guy was trying the elevator game). Or at least around the same time. He does not get haunted, but is shaken up from the experience. THEN, dude and his friend get together and decide to play one man hide n seek. Which is not at all as cute as it sounds. Involves summoning demons. So they went from - playfully poking at the "otherworld" to straight up *inviting* demons??? WHILE they were still being haunted by elevator lady.
What adults with any common sense would do that (no offense)? He admitted they just wanted "cheap thrills". But -- after you've gotten such a big scare, and are still "being haunted" - why on earth would you make it worse?
Anyway, predictably, the third game goes horribly wrong too. His friend winds up in the ER (stabbed in the thigh). When they get home, the doll that they had burned (to end the ritual), was hanging from the ceiling fan. Intact.
So they go to the friend's place instead. As soon as he closes his eyes, he's back in his apartment and the elevator lady appears. She's holding a knife - gets closer and closer, and he can't move a muscle.
He wakes up with a start and, lying next to him, is the same old doll. From *his* apartment.
Moral of the Story: When you poke the Otherworld, the Otherworld pokes you back. Literally.
Apparently, the elevator lady poked him (in a dream). When he woke up, he had a red spot on his abdomen and was in a lot of pain. He went to the ER and was told that it was internal haemorrhaging.

Hahaha I love that analogy with knocking on the neighbours door! It totally is!!! Thanks!
The game sort of sets you up to "fail". It's nearly impossible not to look at the lady on the fifth floor. You'll be stuck with her, in an enclosed space. If someone is determined to get your attention, they really can. She could use coercion, trickery, threats, you name it. All it takes is one look. One look at her and you're doomed(?)
Well nigh impossible, I say.

Anyway, reddit is full of people who've tried it or claim to have tried it. There are some other sites with anecdotes too. But, there's also a bunch of people for whom nothing happened and it's nice to hear that. (Adds to the view that it's just urban legend).

Get back by going through the sequence in reverse. I don't understand what happens if you look at the lady though...the game is ruined right? What happens if you don't get off? From what I read, the game goes on even if you look at her. Just gets more dangerous and you might not be entirely alone when you get back. The rule is meant to protect you when you get back to "our" world. If you don't acknowledge her, it can be a stand-alone experience - she won't follow you back.
Also, getting off on the 10th floor is optional. You *can* get out, explore if you want. But you must be able to find your way back to the same lift you came from. The dude who posted the story above said he too wondered why anyone would want to risk getting off at the 10th floor, if there's a chance they might have trouble getting back. But he said that he realized when it was his turn, you'd do anything to get away from that lady. He didn't have any trouble getting back, though. It's when he got back that the trouble started. (Allegedly).

I am also interested in the history of the hotel- I havent managed to find out much more but I know it has some baggage.
I'll be back to post more, but just to lighten the creepiness here is a parody that I found hilarious of the black cab one:
https://www.reddit.com/r/threekings/comments/82e2g2/totally_real_hooded_man_ritual_experienceparody/
Gosh, even if its nonsense, it must create such a psychological trip somehow which I find just as fascinating. Though I'm never taking a lift alone again haha!!
(I was even wondering if for the hooded one that you actually call someone/taxi firm and they drug you, but there must be one available for every place on earth).
Also, imagine the demons and stuff managing to make use of modern day technology to manipulate people haha!

My immediate thought was also that girl who was caught on video acting so strangely in the elevator. Pretty weird.

^ Do you mean Elisa Lam? Yeah, she was acting strangely. Several other women who stayed there met the same fate. All solo travelers.

It sure is! I'll be back to post more about the hotel. It's disturbing, to say the least. A seedy pocket of crime and grime that got away with it for a very long time.

Poor girl and all those others who lost their lives there.
I was just reading about the history of the hotel; apparently around 13 people have died there and some serial killers like Ramirez stayed there... probably a very energetic place to say the least...
What are your thoughts on Lam doing the elevator game? I don't mean to be disrespectful by discussing this. If I am please tell me.

That place has some really bad energy.
I think I mentioned somewhere up there that I doubt she was playing that game. (Even if she was, it would be a different kind of terror that followed her around - I have trouble believing it would culminate in this. However, I have no experience with it, could be wrong). Whatever was happening in that hotel caught up to her. Apparently, she was in daily contact with her folks up until the day she was supposed to check out. Her phone was not on her and I don't know of any attempts made to find it. Lots of things don't add up...
They ignored the crap out of it too.
"I found a black hair which appeared to be off an Asian persons head . Yep black and shiny. Well this was on feb 16 2013. Also our water was brown and had a very foul smell which at the time smelled like a dead Corpse. However we were told that it was down sewer issues .. what do ya know days later a women was found dead in the water tanks on the roof and she was falling apart in the tank . She had. Been there for weeks ."
